James Dondero is a co-founder of Highland Capital Management, LLC. He became part of the governing board since its inception in 1992. Previously, Mr. Dondero served as a Partner and Head of Global Equities for Bankers Trust Company. Additionally, Mr. Dondero served as Vice Chairman of McBurney Capital, LLC.
He served as VP of Condon Asset Management from 1982 to 1983 and vice chairman and head of Stock Research and Portfolio Manager at Wayne County Securities Corporation from 1979 to 1982.
When Highland Capital Management was still in its infancy in the 1980s, James Dondero and his partner Larry Scher built a very successful and consistent institutional fund. In 2007, when high-yield and emerging market debt were on the rise, Highland Capital managed to generate a high return of 13.8%, far outpacing its peers.
One of the main points of differentiation for Highland Capital Management was its ability to select companies in an attractive growth-on-cost valuation range. Investors also pointed out the impressive 9.0% annualized return at Highland Capital returned over the last five years as the firm successfully navigated a difficult market environment.
With Highland Capital Management, James Dondero has helped his firm give back to the community through its “Performance with Purpose” initiative. The most notable of these efforts include Highland’s education and philanthropic giving. The firm gives over $40 million to various charitable organizations annually, including schools, libraries, and health organizations.
James Dondero noted that the education portion of the initiative focuses on building programs at K-12 public schools. These programs focus on the social and emotional growth of children, including an emphasis on understanding. James was born in Buffalo, NY on December 19, 1962. He attended Lakeview High School in Orchard Park NY. While there, he participated in two varsity sports – lacrosse and track. Visit this page on Twitter, for more information.
